Abstract

Using the radiation therapy (MV) beam for imaging has many clinical advantages but is limited by poor contrast, compared to kV imaging. Recent technological developments have led to a resurgence of interest in MV imaging as a viable alternative for pre-treatment and in-treatment imaging. Novel flat-panel detector configurations can reduce imaging dose requirements and provide multi-energy imaging for advanced applications. Our group has been leading efforts in this area in collaboration with Varian Medical Systems, Inc. with the goal of translating an inexpensive, multi-functional MV imaging solution.

Short Bio

Ross is the Director of Medical Physics Research in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. Originally trained in High-Energy Physics, Ross received Postdoctoral training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School under the supervision of Dr. Steve Jiang. Since 2005, Ross has been a faculty member at the BWH/DFCI, receiving ABR certification in 2010. His research interests include real-time motion management, novel imaging devices, 4DPET/CT, nanoparticles as radiation amplifiers, and pre-clinical radiation therapy. To perform this work, Ross has been a primary mentor for over 20 postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students with funding provided by Industrial and Federal sources.
