Tina Kapur, PhD and and Andrew Goldsmith, MD, MBA Received Massachusetts Life Sciences Center Research Grant

Tina Kapur, PhD, of the Department of Radiology and Andrew Goldsmith, MD, MBA, of the Department of Emergency Medicine, received capital funding from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) for their research project, “Artificial Intelligence Guidance for High-Yield Point-of-Care Ultrasound Applications.”

Under the Baker-Polito Administration, MLSC is distributing over $18 million in capital funding that will be put toward 15 innovative research projects seeking to expand the field of life sciences. Partnering with Centaur Labs, a provider of medical data labeling, Goldsmith and Kapur’s team will aim to develop artificial intelligence applications for point-of-care ultrasound, which enable physicians to obtain critical diagnostic information at the bedside.

More broadly at the Brigham, Goldsmith serves as director of the Division of Emergency Ultrasound. His research includes innovations in point of care ultrasound (POCUS) to guide nerve block injections and hence provide a viable alternative to opioids for patients seeking pain relief.

Kapur serves as executive director of Image-Guided Therapy in Radiology. Her research includes translation of contemporary machine learning methods for segmentation, registration, and navigation to aid ultrasound-guided interventions.

Goldsmith and Kapur partnered up at the start of the pandemic to improve the state of the art in computer-assisted triage of COVID from ultrasounds acquired in triage tents set up at the Brigham, and are committed to developing clinical practices and supporting tools that maximize the opportunities offered by low-cost bedside ultrasound worldwide.
