Ron Kikinis Appointed HMS B. Leonard Holman Professor of Radiology

Ron Kikinis, MD vice chair of Biomedical Informatics Research and founding director of the Surgical Planning Laboratory in the Department of Radiology, was named the second B. Leonard Holman Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School (HMS) in honor of his outstanding contributions to the field.

This appointment honors the legacy and memory of nuclear medicine pioneer B. Leonard Holman, MD, former chair of Radiology at the Brigham and the Philip Cook Professor of Radiology at HMS, who died in 1998. Kikinis’ appointment follows that of his mentor and the position’s first incumbent, the late Ferenc A. Jolesz, MD, who served as director of the MRI Division and the Image-Guided Therapy Program at the Brigham.

Since the mid-1980s, Kikinis has performed research in the evolving field of image-processing algorithms and their use for extracting relevant information from medical imaging data. As an investigator, his interests include technological research (segmentation, registration, visualization and high-performance computing), software system development and biomedical research in a variety of biomedical specialties
