Quantification of WMT displacement due to brain shift

Non-rigid registration of pre-operative imaging (T1, fMRI, DTI) with intra-operative imaging. We enhance the current procedure by aligning pre-operative imaging with intra-operative imaging. The T1, fMRI, DTI images are displayed during tumor resection. Damage of critical structures can be avoided while achieving gross tumor resection.

Background

During brain tumor resection the position of the white matter tracts is changing due to the brain shift. Deformations have been recently measured before and after tumor resection and reported in Nimsky et al. 2005. The reported displacement range is from -8 to +15 mm. However, there is no current study on the displacement of WMT during tumor resection.

Objective

Retrospective analysis of brain images acquired before (DTI, T1) and during tumor resection (T1) and compute the displacement of different groups of fiber tracts. This study is conducted in collaboration with Florin Talos.
